The University of Alabama School of Medicine at Birmingham (UAB) invites nominations and expressions of interest for the position of Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine.
The University of Alabama School of Medicine at Birmingham (UAB) is one of the premier research-intensive schools in the nation, ranked No. 22 in NIH funding by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research for 2019, and currently in a strong era of major investment and growth. Key leaders at UAB, namely the Joint Operating Leadership group (Dean Selwyn Vickers, COO Reid Jones, Dr. Keith A. (Tony) Jones, Dr. Seth Landefeld, Dr. Herb Chen, Dr. Cheri Canon, and Dr. David Standaert), are strategically focused on the goal of becoming the Preferred Academic Medical Center of the 21st Century.
UAB has undergone staggering transformation in the past 5 years, strengthening their status and reputation as a leader in medical training, biomedical discovery and innovation, and patient care. As part of an elite group of eight academic medical centers that has attained more than $100 million in net NIH funding growth over the past five years, UAB has the second-highest percentage of growth at 75 percent.
UAB’s aspirations also include a forthcoming strategic alliance with Ascension St. Vincent. This ambitious and innovative collaboration will improve access to high-quality patient care and address Alabama’s most challenging health threats.
The Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine will be an outstanding leader and skilled physician, widely recognized in the field with a strong track record of program building and innovation. The Chair will be responsible for clinical, academic, and administrative activities of the Department and therefore they must have a deep knowledge of clinical practice; a strong commitment to training and career development in research and clinical care; and demonstrated leadership and administrative ability in complex clinical enterprise.
The Chair must demonstrate a passion for mentoring and development of faculty and fellows, including interpersonal skills that will assure successful relationship building with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. The Chair will be charged with fostering an environment of collaboration, integrity, trust, and transparency between the Department and UAB Medicine at large. They will work to create a stronger collective culture within the Department, bringing together the multidisciplinary people and programs with a shared vision and purpose, and thereby enhancing faculty engagement and development.
The Chair will bring vision to the task of drafting the Department’s future, coupled with an ability to communicate in a fashion that inspires others to follow. They must be a consensus builder, while also capable of serving as an agent for change. The Chair will evaluate the current strengths of the Department, and identify areas for productive growth in clinical, educational, and research programs. From that assessment, they will establish a strategic overarching long-term plan for the Department.
