GENERAL SUMMARY: In partnership with the Surgeon in Chief and designated Medical Directors, provides executive leadership through developing and articulating a shared vision and implementing a comprehensive strategic plan for Surgical and Diagnostic Services across Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin (CHW). Develops and articulates strategic business growth plans aligned with the organization mission and vision and identifies opportunities to broaden and develop additional services. Assures the delivery, management, and operations of the services provided and achieves the intended performance objectives. Strong leadership skills and a high degree of confidence and experience in managing physician relationships, surgical and diagnostic services operations, and business program development are crucial aspects of this role. KEY COLLABORATIONS AND AREAS OF RESPONSIBLITY: Key collaborations include Surgeon in Chief, Clinical VP for Surgical Services, Chief of Pediatric Anesthesiology, CHW Medical Staff Chief of Surgery, Medical Directors, Service Line Executive Directors, and Directors of Patient Care. In addition, collaborates with the system executive leaders and serves as a member of the hospital executive team collaborating with the CHW Vice Presidents. Areas of responsibility include Surgical Services and the Surgicenter of Greater Milwaukee, Pharmacy Services, and Diagnostic Services of Laboratory and Imaging. Surgical Services includes Operating Room, Day Surgery/PACU, Special Procedures Unit, Sterile Processing, Solid Organ Transplant, and Trauma Program. - Partners with the Clinical VP of Surgical Services, Surgeon-in-Chief, and Medical Directors to develop, implement and evaluate all programs ensuring the safest patient care, clinical excellence, effective coordination of services, and adherence to quality standards. Ensures established methodology and structure is in place to review and analyze program measures to improve patient care outcomes, efficiency, access, and patient/family satisfaction.
- Collaborates with key physicians, executives, strategic planning, and management to establish and implement a clinical enterprise strategic plan for optimal performance of Surgical Services. Assures alignment with community need. Develops and secures approval for capital and operating budgets for assigned areas.
- Provides administrative leadership to assigned departments; ensures directors are well informed concerning hospital and system plans; works with directors to establish goals, objectives and plans to support the strategic plan of the organization. Monitors progress toward achievement of these objectives.
- Collaborates with key resources in utilizing information systems to establish data for use in real time data driven decision making, outcomes reporting, and quality improvement.
- Provides regular feedback to directors concerning performance and completes annual evaluations; obtains feedback from other customers and other members of the executive team concerning performance of departments.
- Reviews revenue, capital, personnel and operating budgets submitted by directors and works with directors to align with the strategic plan and vision.
- Maintains cooperative working relationships with physicians, departments, and employees in order to improve coordination of services provided and improve patient, physician and employee satisfaction. Ensures visibility with employees through rounding.
- Partners with foundation team members to grow a robust philanthropic program plan to support services.
- Supports, reviews, and understands standards of The Joint Commission and other accrediting agencies. Ensures compliance with standards.
- Develops and maintains a variety of external contacts with educational institutions, community and professional organizations to understand market changing activities within areas of direct oversight.
- Serves as back-up to the administrator on call.
