BP6 is a 28 bed Medical-Surgical unit that specializes in General Surgery patients, along with services such as Bariatric, ENT, Urology, Gynocology, Plastics, and Trauma Surgery (just to name a few).
More often than not our patients have some type of drain/incision or wounds, due to our high population of surgery patients. We are a fast-paced unit that routinely has high patient turnover. We often times discharge the majority of our patients, and receive as many admissions in the same day. Our nurse to patient ratio is 4:1 on D/E and 5-6:1 on Nights. This is a busy unit, so someone who is a team player and well organized is important. We also look for candidates that will maintain our focus of patient centered care.
We have a number of resources on our unit: Pharmacist, Care manager & Social worker, Scheduler (for follow up appointments), and a care support assist (who helps manage equipment, among many other things) We also have a wound ostomy team, and IV team available hospital wide if needed for additional resources.
The Registered Nurse assesses plans, organizes, performs, and evaluates nursing activities to meet the needs of the patient. Promotes adaptive responses of patient/family to achieve the highest level of patient care, promote safety, and maximize patient satisfaction. Exhibits compassionate care during patient-nurse interactions. Coordinates patient care and interaction of staff. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in their assigned nursing unit.
Responsible for ensuring the very best patient/family experience by optimizing all interactions. Foster a positive work environment through mutual support and cooperation and adheres to GHS and unit specific Service Standards.
Reports directly to the Operations Manager.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
*1. Meets and follows the Division's and Organization's established Service Standards and adheres to the Code of Conduct. Maintains professional confidentiality, a positive attitude, professional behavior, and attire.
*2. Completes assessments as established by scope of practice and unit standards. Addresses physical, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual needs of patient and family throughout the continuum of care.
*3. Formulates, coordinates, and provides plan of care as established in unit standards including, patient/family education, family needs and discharge planning throughout hospitalization with members of the interdisciplinary team.
*4 Provides direct patient care including, treatments, medications, and diagnostic studies according to policy/procedure.
*5. Evaluates effectiveness of nursing interventions and revises plan of care based upon patient response to interventions.
*6. Demonstrates the necessary skills and knowledge to provide treatment and care to the age of patients served (i.e. neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, and geriatrics).
*7. Initiates collaboration with physicians, ancillary personnel, and other interdisciplinary team members and takes action to proactively resolve and facilitate patient needs.
*8. Makes assignments in collaboration with other team members. Directs and/or alters assignments in response to changes in patient situations.
*9. Promotes teamwork by delegating tasks to team members on the basis of skill, expertise, time availability, acuity, and needs of the patient.
*10. Performs charge nurse duties as assigned.
*11. Problem solves, troubleshoots and takes corrective measures in the care and handling of equipment.
*12. Participates in unit-based decision-making regarding the utilization of evidence based practice.
13. Provides input to the manager for performance appraisals of care delivery team members.
*14. Actively participates as a team member working toward team goals of the unit and organization and is accountable for unit/system specific metrics.
15. Suggests issues of improvement and offers solutions to the issues.
*16. Actively participates in education and professional development activities.
*17. Supports and participates in initiatives that support the Magnet mission.
*18. Maintains all hospital and unit-specific competencies, GOALS, and employee health requirements in a timely manner.
*19. Maintains licensure and required continuing education. Obtains/maintains certification (i.e. BLS, ACLS, PALS, Trauma). Certification type dependent upon specific unit requirements.
*20. Precepts and mentors new staff in a professional, positive manner as assigned.
*21. Mentors student nurses in a professional, positive manner.
*22. Actively participates in patient quality/safety education programs and other activities designed to improve departmental and organizational quality and safety.
*23. Performs other duties as required or assigned by emergency or other operational reasons for which the employee is qualified to perform.
*24. Promotes fiscal responsibility for resource management.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
For Registered Nurses with less than five (5) years work experience as an RN, a BSN degree is required or enrollment in a BSN program within 12 months of hire date with BSN degree completed within 4 years of hire date is required.
For Registered Nurses with more than 5 years of work experience as an RN in an acute/inpatient capacity, a BSN degree is not required.
For current Geisinger Registered Nurses who transfer into this position, BSN degree is preferred.
BLS certification preferred and required within 60 days of employment.
ACLS/PALS may be required within 1 year of employment (unit specific).
Duration of on-the-job training to become familiar with job duties varies by individual unit.
