The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center (RHJVAMC) in Charleston, SC, is currently searching for an energetic and forward thinking Director for its Health Equity and Rural Outreach Innovation Center (HEROIC). HEROIC is one of 19 nationally funded VA HSR&D Centers of Innovation (COIN) aimed at increasing the impact of health services research on the health and health care of Veterans. HEROIC's mission is to improve access and equity in healthcare for all Veterans by eliminating geographic, racial/ethnic, and gender-based disparities.
As the Director, you will enjoy the support of a highly-trained staff while working in a high complexity tertiary care organization comprised of the main medical center and six (6) community based outpatient clinics. HEROIC is comprised of a dedicated multidisciplinary team of 24 doctorally-trained core investigators conducting leading edge research through a diverse portfolio of grants. You will be responsible for the day to day operations of the Center in collaboration with an Associate Director and staff with additional administrative supported from the RHJVAMC Research Service. You will support investigator recruitments, provide overall scientific guidance, mentor junior investigators, ensure high quality grant development and preparation, collaborate effectively with VA operational partners, and continue to elevate the profile of HEROIC on a national level.
Applicants for this position must have extensive experience in health services research in areas relevant to HEROIC foci. Successful candidates will have a strong track record of extramural grant funding that includes VA, DoD, and NIH sources. Prior research center leadership at the Director or Associate Director level and knowledge of VA funding mechanisms will be highly valued.
The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center enjoys a collegial and highly successful relationship with our academic affiliate, the Medical University of South Carolina, and candidates will be eligible for faculty appointment at MUSC at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level commensurate with experience. Opportunities also exist for participation/leadership within the MUSC Center for Health Disparities Research housed in the MUSC Department of Medicine.
The position is located in Charleston, SC - tucked along the Atlantic coastline and amid the ever bustling Harbor, Historic Downtown Charleston is the mecca of this historic city, housing various art galleries, boutiques, and historic sites along with renowned medical centers such as the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), our academic affiliate partner.
Work Schedule:8:00AM - 4:30PM, Monday thru Friday, Some Weekends and Holidays

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physician Staff Requirements:
Staff Physician. None beyond the basic requirements. The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, have completed an accredited residency and/or possess experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staff physicians may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine.
Leadership/Manager Positions. Physician leadership and manager positions may be Chief of Staff, Directors (i.e., medical center and Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN)); selected positions in Central Office; Distinguished Physicians; and Service Chiefs or Service Line Managers. Positions are approved for these levels based on the scope and complexity of the assignment and the level of responsibility.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
