TheMarion VA Medical Center is currently seeking a full time, Board Eligible or Certified Hospitalist. The hospitalist is responsible for the care of patients who may be admitted to the medical ward or ICU. He/she shall be familiar with Medical Center disaster policy is responsible for treatment of casualties until the arrival of additional medical staff. The hospitalist shall screen calls from private and VA physicians regarding referrals of veterans to the hospital. He/she shall make telephone arrangements with appropriate VA physician at tertiary care VA Medical Centers to arrange for referral of patients to other VA Medical Centers. He/she will electronically sign all orders before they be carried out.
The Hospitalist specializes in inpatient medicine, and acts as a patient's primary doctor while the patient is hospitalized, ordering tests and procedures and ensuring that tests and procedures are evaluated. The Hospitalists also coordinate the care of patients' in hospital and are "captain of the ship." They are the physicians that organize the communication between different doctors caring for a patient, and serve as the point of contact for other doctors and nurses for questions, updates, and delineating a comprehensive plan of care. They are also the main physician for family members to contact The position requires involvement in various hospital committees, and assisting in improving important areas such as patient safety, medical error reduction, effective communication between physicians and staff, and cost effective patient care.
Current experience, up to date procedure skills as well as excellent clinical skills are required. Incumbent must be BLS/ACLS certified.
-Overnight patient care duties on the inpatient medical units.
-Coordination of inter-facility transfers during evening/night hours.
-Responsibilities include medical inpatient care, medical consultation, teaching, active participation in quality efforts, facilitating safe discharges, and involvement in leadership activities.
-Timely documentation (notes and encounter forms) is necessary in all areas in accordance with facility policy. All administrative work to be completed in a timely manner.
-Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Nights and weekends; varying shifts.
Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
